Seattle, a city on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, is surrounded by water, mountains and evergreen forests, and contains thousands of acres of parkland. Washington State&rsquo;s largest city, it&rsquo;s home to a large tech industry, with Microsoft and Amazon headquartered in its metropolitan area. The futuristic Space Needle, a 1962 World&rsquo;s Fair legacy, is its most iconic landmark.
Seattle has a history of boom-and-bust cycles, like many other cities near areas of extensive natural and mineral resources. Seattle has risen several times economically, then gone into precipitous decline, but it has typically used those periods to rebuild solid infrastructure.
The first such boom, covering the early years of the city, rode on the lumber industry. During this period the road now known as Yesler Way won the nickname "Skid Road," supposedly after the timber skidding down the hill to Henry Yesler's sawmill. The later dereliction of the area may be a possible origin for the term which later entered the wider American lexicon as Skid Row. Like much of the American West, Seattle saw numerous conflicts between labor and management, as well as ethnic tensions that culminated in the anti-Chinese riots of 1885&ndash;1886. This violence originated with unemployed whites who were determined to drive the Chinese from Seattle (anti-Chinese riots also occurred in Tacoma). In 1900, Asians were 4.2% of the population. Authorities declared martial law and federal troops arrived to put down the disorder.
Seattle had achieved sufficient economic success that when the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 destroyed the central business district, a far grander city-center rapidly emerged in its place. Finance company Washington Mutual, for example, was founded in the immediate wake of the fire. However, the Panic of 1893 hit Seattle hard.

Seattle

Kirkland is a city in King County, Washington, United States. A suburb east of Seattle, its population was 93,010 in a 2019 census estimate, which made it the sixth largest city in the county and the thirteenth largest in the state. The city's downtown waterfront has restaurants, art galleries, a performing arts center, public parks, beaches, and a collection of public art, primarily bronze sculptures. Kirkland was the original home of the Seattle Seahawks; the NFL team's headquarters and training facility were located at the Lake Washington Shipyard (now Carillon Point) along Lake Washington for their first ten seasons (1976&ndash;85), then at nearby Northwest University through 2007. Warehouse chain Costco previously had its headquarters in Kirkland. While Costco is now headquartered in Issaquah, the city is the namesake of its "Kirkland Signature" store brand.

Bellevue is a city in Washington state, across Lake Washington from Seattle. Downtown Park has a large lawn, gardens and a waterfall. Nearby, the Bellevue Arts Museum features craft and design exhibitions, plus a sculpture garden. The Bellevue Botanical Garden highlights Pacific Northwest plants, and includes woodlands and wetlands. KidsQuest Children&rsquo;s Museum has interactive science, tech and art exhibitions.
Bellevue lies between&nbsp;Lake Washington&nbsp;to the west and the smaller&nbsp;Lake Sammamish&nbsp;to the east. Much of Bellevue is drained by the&nbsp;Kelsey Creek&nbsp;watershed, whose source is located in the Larsen Lake and&nbsp;Phantom Lake&nbsp;green belt&nbsp;and whose outlet is near where&nbsp;Interstate 90&nbsp;meets Lake Washington's eastern shore. The city is bisected by&nbsp;Interstate 405&nbsp;running north&ndash;south, and the southern portion is crossed from west to east by Interstate 90. The&nbsp;State Route 520&nbsp;freeway roughly delineates the upper reaches of Bellevue.
According to the&nbsp;United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.47 square miles (94.46&nbsp;km2), of which 31.97 square miles (82.80&nbsp;km2) is land and 4.50 square miles (11.65&nbsp;km2) is water. The city's name is derived from a&nbsp;French&nbsp;term for "beautiful view". Under favorable weather conditions, scenic vistas of the&nbsp;Olympic Mountains&nbsp;and&nbsp;Cascade Mountains can be viewed from hilltops (and strategically positioned high-rise buildings) within the incorporated city. South of I-90, the city continues up&nbsp;Cougar Mountain, at the top of which is an unincorporated King County location called Hilltop. To the west of Cougar Mountain, Bellevue includes the&nbsp;Coal Creek, Somerset, and&nbsp;<a href="\" title="Factoria, Bellevue">Factoria</a>&nbsp;neighborhoods.
Bellevue is bordered by the cities of&nbsp;Kirkland&nbsp;to the north and&nbsp;Redmond&nbsp;to the northeast along the&nbsp;Overlake&nbsp;and&nbsp;Crossroads&nbsp;neighborhoods. Across the short&nbsp;East Channel Bridge, I-90 connects Bellevue to&nbsp;Mercer Island&nbsp;to the southwest.&nbsp;Issaquah&nbsp;is to the east, down I-90 at the south end of Lake Sammamish. The city is bordered to the west by many affluent suburbs such as&nbsp;Medina,&nbsp;Clyde Hill,&nbsp;Hunts Point&nbsp;and&nbsp;Yarrow Point. The south end of Bellevue is bordered by the city of&nbsp;Renton, and to the southeast, the relatively recently incorporated city of&nbsp;Newcastle.
